Last semester I took an awesome course entitled "Reading Methods I". Ok, honestly, that sounds boring. And I hated that the class started at 7am and that it was always freezing cold on the way there. But I got a pass to park near by the class so I didn't have to walk anymore, and that made it ok.
In the class, we read a book called Words Their Way. It was written to teach children how to read. It talked about teaching them in the way they want and the NEED to be taught.
Through the work I did in the course, I learned that children not only read a certain way, they also talk a certain way, and working in preschool only reinforced that. I've loved every minute walking in preschool. I loved working with the 2 year olds because they were so cute. I loved working with the 3 year olds because they were constantly learning and discovering. But I really found my passion for preschool when I started working with the 4 year olds and really started having conversations with these children, and I realized they can talk! They understand. And the younger ones do too.
Reading is so important and I want all kids to be able to read and to be successful. A big tip in this class I took was that the best way to teach children to read is to talk to them constantly.
So that's what I did.
This is a new chapter in the blog called "Teacher!" The exclamation point and quotation marks didn't fit in the header so they're not there, but you get the point. My name is "Teacher!" Sometimes it's "Miss Lara!" Sometimes it's the name of a different co-worker, but mostly it's "Teacher!"
Several people have been prompting me to start a blog sharing my adventures at work, but... well, they're adventures, and this blog is the new world adventure. Besides, I didn't want the responsibility of writing two different blogs, so I'm just smashing all my life into one.
Some day I may not work in the preschool anymore, but some day I will be an elementary school teacher. And as long as kids have someone to talk to, they will say things. And some day I won't be a teacher, but I will be a mom, and I will make sure my kids are always saying crazy things.
And here are my stories.
